Elementary school photos - baby boomer venues
These are class photos taken at various venues around New City and Clarkstown. Due to the exploding post-war population, school districts all over the country were overwhelmed with students, and no place to put them. Students were sent to churches, firehouse basements, American Legion halls, and wherever some space could be borrowed, and turned into a classroom.
These, then, are the "baby boomer venues" - photos of pupils belonging to the future Clarkstown High School class of 1967.
We're still looking for other grade school photos from baby boomer venues-- please contact the webmaster below if you can help.
Note: Click to view larger image captioned with names of students. All Clarkstown '67 photos are hosted off-site on flickr.com.
- Kindergarten 54-55 - Methodist Church on Maple Ave in New City (teacher ?)
- 1st grade 55-56 - old New City school on Schoolhouse Rd - Mrs. MacMillan
- 2nd grade 56-57 - American Legion Hall - Mrs. Seward
- 3rd grade 57-58 - New City Firehouse, downstairs - Mrs. Barrett
- 5th grade 59-60 - Congers Elementary*, Mr. Stellato
Note: You can view all these photos in various sizes on Flickr, and download them. When you get to Flickr, look for the link 'ALL SIZES' above the main photo, and click it.
* Note that the 5th grade class of Mr. Stellato was held in the regular Congers Elementary School on Lake Road, so this wasn't a temporary classroom in a non-school building, like the other baby boomer classes.
However, it belongs on the boomers page, because some pupils from New City who should have attended New City Elementary (and were even pre-registered there, and taken there by school bus on day one) ended up being sent to Congers due to over-capacity classrooms at New City Elementary. Because of that, some pupils in Congers classrooms in 1959-60 are part of the boomer phenomenon, and their class photos are included here. (You can also find them on the Congers Elementary page as well.)
If you don't see your class photo from a baby boomer venue listed, please contact the webmaster.
Also, we're looking for photos from Bardonia and West Nyack elementary, and more from Chestnut Grove, Little Tor, and Street School, or any other school you may have attended in the district. If you have any class photos you can contribute, please contact the webmaster.
